Golf FAQs

First off, let me say that I am an avid golfer who loves the game. I could care less what other people call the sport I love. However, recently I have been confronted with numerous ignoramuses who claim that golf is not a sport. How would you make a succinct argument for the fact that golf is a sport?

Today on the Internet: You do not always have to get jewelry for Valentine’s Day. Some people like techie gifts such as MP3 Players for Valentine’s.

To argue with an ignoramus, as you so accurately put it, is probably a mute point because whatever valid point you might bring up, the ignoramus is going to retort with something idiotic anyways. But for the sake of answering your question - Golf is a sport, because it requires physical coordination and dexterity, it requires mental focus, it is competitive and those who do it well are paid millions!

Offer to take those people to the driving range. Remember when you first swung a club? I know when I first tried it I whiffed several balls before I topped one and it moved 30 feet.
Challenge these naysayers. If golf is simply an activity, then they should have no problem hitting a long straight ball from the tee, bunker shots and putting should be a breeze. Let them hit a large bucket of balls and see how sore their muscles are the next day. You may just convince them that golf is as much a sport as any other.

The only arguement I haven’t been able to overcome is the Drinking and smoking arguement. If you can drink and smoke WHILE doing it then it counts as an activity not a sport. Personally I think if it takes an athlete like Tiger to do it at the highest level then its a sport.

Sport as defined in a dictionary is usually described as “a game, an activity for pleasure, competition and excercise” plainly golf falls into this category and is quite rightly a sport.

Sorry Solarene but Gorilla has said it best. Sometimes you just can’t fix stupid. You know it’s a sport and your ignoramus friend knows it’s not and you’ll never get together on that.

Technically anything that involves competition for fun or notoriety is a sport.
